- 6 Days Marangu Route
Overview
The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers hut accommodation instead of tents, providing added comfort and convenience throughout your trek. Known for its steady, gradual trails, this route approaches the summit from the southeast and passes through lush rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching the glacier-clad summit of Uhuru Peak.
Below is the complete day-by-day itinerary.
Itinerary In Details
Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,870m) → Mandara Hut (2,720m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate, where registration and a detailed trek briefing take place. After meeting your mountain crew, you enter Kilimanjaro’s rich rainforest—an enchanting world filled with towering trees, thick undergrowth, and the distinct calls of colobus monkeys.
The trail ascends gently on well-maintained paths, making for a comfortable introduction to the mountain.
You arrive at Mandara Hut, a charming camp tucked into the forest edge. After settling in, you may take a short walk to Maundi Crater for beautiful views over northern Tanzania and into Kenya.
Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,720m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today you climb out of the forest and into the open moorland zone. As views open up, the landscape transitions into rolling heather and volcanic rock formations.
You will catch your first clear glimpse of Kibo and Mawenzi, the twin peaks that dominate the horizon.
The trail is steady but rewarding, offering excellent acclimatization.
Arrival at Horombo Hut reveals a lively mountain village atmosphere, with trekkers ascending and descending the route.
Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Kibo Hut (4,700m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
This pivotal day takes you through the saddle, a vast and surreal desert-like plateau stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo.
The trail rises gradually, and as vegetation fades, the environment becomes stark, quiet, and dramatic—one of the most unique landscapes on Kilimanjaro.
At Kibo Hut, your high-altitude base for the summit attempt, you rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the long summit night.
Dinner is early, and sleep is encouraged—your push to Uhuru Peak begins shortly after midnight.
Day 4 (Summit Day): Kibo Hut (4,700m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Hiking Time: 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland
Summit day begins under a canopy of stars as you ascend steep switchbacks toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim.
This demanding section is the toughest of the entire trek, but the reward is immense—an unforgettable dawn breaks as you approach the top of Africa.
From Gilman’s Point, the trail continues along the snowy crater ridge to Uhuru Peak, the iconic summit of Kilimanjaro at 5,895m.
After celebrating and taking your summit photos, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest.
Continue down to Horombo Hut, where the warm air, plentiful oxygen, and a hearty meal await. This is your final night on the mountain.
Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) → Marangu Gate (1,870m)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland to Rainforest
Your final descent retraces your steps through the moorland and into the lush rainforest.
Upon arriving at Marangu Gate, you sign out, receive your summit certificates, and celebrate with your team.
A vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel for a well-deserved shower, rest, and celebration of your achievement.
