Below is the complete day-by-day itinerary.
Itinerary In Details
Day 1: Lemosho Gate (2,100m) → Big Tree Camp (2,780m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Your journey begins with a scenic drive to Lemosho Gate, where registration and briefing take place. After meeting your mountain crew, the trek begins through untouched rainforest—lush, green, and alive with wildlife. The trail is gently undulating, offering a comfortable introduction to the mountain.
You arrive at Big Tree Camp for your first night on the mountain, surrounded by towering forest canopy and the peaceful sounds of nature.
Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2,780m) → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today the trail climbs steadily out of the forest and into the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world. Views open up toward the Shira Ridge and the western flank of Kilimanjaro.
The day offers excellent acclimatization as you gain altitude gradually. You arrive at Shira 1 Camp, positioned on wide open moorland with your first clear views of Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) → Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
This shorter day allows your body to adapt to the increasing elevation. The trek crosses the plateau, offering panoramic views across the Shira Plains. You may explore the plateau’s unique flora, including giant groundsels and lobelias.
You reach Shira 2 Camp, where you enjoy stunning sunsets and early views of the summit cone. Afternoon acclimatization hikes are encouraged for improved success on summit night.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: High Alpine Desert
A challenging but vital acclimatization day, you ascend steadily to Lava Tower, reaching 4,600m—the highest point so far. This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust to the altitude.
After lunch at Lava Tower, you descend into the massive Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and the iconic Barranco Wall.
Overnight at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic campsites on the mountain, known for spectacular sunsets and dramatic landscapes.
Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Begin the morning with a scramble over the famous Barranco Wall—an exhilarating and rewarding climb that leads to breathtaking views of the southern glaciers.
The trail continues through rolling ridges and valleys until reaching Karanga Camp, the final water point for the ascent.
This is a shorter day to optimize acclimatization before the final push to high camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The journey to Barafu Camp, your high-altitude base for the summit attempt, features a steady climb over rocky terrain.
At camp, you rest, hydrate, and prepare for the summit push. The landscape is stark and dramatic, with sweeping views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit path.
Sleep early—your summit attempt begins around midnight.
Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,640m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Rainforest
The most demanding and most rewarding day begins in the dark as you follow the trail toward the summit.
After a steep climb, you reach Stella Point (5,756m) in time for an unforgettable sunrise. A short final push leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m.
Celebrate your achievement, take photos at the summit sign, and begin your descent back to Barafu for a short rest.
Continue down through changing vegetation zones to Mweka Camp, where you will enjoy your final night on Kilimanjaro.
Day 8 (Departure Day): Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,650m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your final descent takes you through the thick montane forest to Mweka Gate, where you sign out, celebrate with your team, and receive your summit certificates.
A vehicle awaits to transfer you back to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
