Overview
The 7-Day Machame Route—often called the “Whiskey Route”—is one of Kilimanjaro’s most popular and scenic trekking routes. Known for its dramatic landscapes, well-paced acclimatization, and a rewarding blend of forest, moorland, and alpine desert, Machame offers a challenging yet highly successful path to the summit.
Below is the complete day-by-day itinerary.
Itinerary In Details
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (3,000m)
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Your adventure begins at Machame Gate, where registration is completed and your mountain crew organizes the gear. The trek starts through lush rainforest—a vibrant, mossy world filled with streams, ferns, and ancient trees.
The trail is steady but can be muddy, especially after rain. As you gain altitude, the vegetation begins to thin, and you arrive at Machame Camp, nestled at the forest’s upper edge. Enjoy your first dinner on the mountain beneath a sky full of stars.
Day 2: Machame Camp (3,000m) → Shira Camp (3,850m)
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
The day begins with a steep climb out of the forest and into the open moorland. The trail winds through volcanic rock formations and hardy alpine vegetation. As you ascend, the views open dramatically, revealing the Shira Plateau and the sweeping western slopes of Kilimanjaro.
You arrive at Shira Camp in the early afternoon, where you can explore the surrounding plateau and enjoy panoramic views of Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira Camp (3,850m) → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: High Alpine Desert
A pivotal acclimatization day, this trek follows a gradual ascent toward the iconic Lava Tower. Reaching 4,600m, you experience your highest elevation so far—an important “climb high, sleep low” moment for acclimatization.
After lunch at Lava Tower, the trail descends into the spectacular Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and dramatic views of the southern glaciers.
Overnight at Barranco Camp, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and atmospheric campsites.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Your day begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall—a non-technical but thrilling scramble offering stunning views of Kibo’s glaciers.
After cresting the wall, the trail meanders across a series of gentle ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, your base for rest and acclimatization.
This shorter day builds strength and energy ahead of the demanding push to high camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today you continue upward toward Barafu Camp, your final staging point before the summit attempt. The terrain becomes rocky and barren, emphasizing the mountain’s harsh and beautiful alpine desert environment.
Upon arrival, you settle in early, hydrate well, and prepare your gear for the summit push.
Rest is essential—your ascent to Uhuru Peak begins just after midnight.
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Rainforest
Summit day begins in the darkness, guided by headlamps as you climb steadily toward the crater rim. The cold is intense, but the motivation is high as you approach Stella Point (5,756m), where the first light of dawn paints the sky.
A final, gradual ascent leads you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa—5,895m. Celebrate your achievement, take iconic photos, and savor the moment.
Afterward, descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Mweka Camp, where oxygen levels and temperatures are more forgiving.
Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,650m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your final descent takes you back into the lush rainforest, where the trail can be slippery but beautiful.
At Mweka Gate, you sign out, receive your well-earned summit certificates, and celebrate with your guides and porters.
A vehicle will transfer you to your hotel for a well-deserved shower, meal, and rest.
