7 Days Rongai Route

Overview

The 7-Day Rongai Route is the only trail approaching Kilimanjaro from the northern (Kenyan) side, offering a remote and less-traveled ascent with pristine wilderness, gentle slopes, and consistent acclimatization. This route is known for its quiet trails, drier climate, and excellent views of both Kibo and Mawenzi volcanoes. Below is the complete day-by-day itinerary.

Itinerary In Details

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) → Simba Camp (2,600m)

Hiking Time: 3–4 hous
Habitat: Montane Forest

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive to Kilimanjaro’s northern side, close to the Kenyan border. After registration at Rongai Gate, the trek starts on a gentle, winding path that cuts through farmland and stretches of forest where colobus monkeys are often spotted.
The trail provides a smooth and easy introduction to the mountain as you gradually ascend to Simba Camp, located on the edge of the moorland zone. Enjoy your first night under open skies with expansive views over the plains.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Today you climb steadily into the moorland region, where vegetation shifts to heathers and volcanic rock formations. The route offers fantastic views of the vast Kenyan plains to the north and the striking Mawenzi Peak to the east.
You arrive at Second Cave Camp, named after a large volcanic cave nearby. This campsite provides a peaceful, open setting ideal for acclimatization and photography.

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

This shorter trekking day allows for gradual altitude gain, helping your body adapt. The path leads toward the rugged Mawenzi Peak, whose sharp ridges dominate the skyline.
Arriving at Kikelewa Camp, you find a beautiful location tucked in a sheltered valley with lush vegetation fed by nearby mountain streams. Afternoon acclimatization walks are recommended to boost your summit success.

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

A stunning day of trekking begins as you climb steeply through alpine vegetation toward the base of Mawenzi. The rugged beauty of this volcanic peak becomes more dramatic as you approach Mawenzi Tarn—one of Kilimanjaro’s most picturesque campsites, nestled beneath towering cliffs and beside a clear mountain tarn.
This is an excellent acclimatization day, and the afternoon can be spent exploring the surrounding ridges or resting and enjoying the breathtaking scenery.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek crosses the lunar-like Saddle—a vast, arid plateau stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is stark and silent, offering a dramatic contrast to previous days.
You arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. This high-altitude camp is your base for the summit push. Rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the midnight start. Early sleep is essential for the demanding climb ahead.

Hiking Time: 12–14 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland

Your summit attempt begins in the dark, ascending the winding switchbacks up the steep slopes of Kibo. The climb is physical and mentally challenging, but steady and deliberate progress leads you to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, often just in time for sunrise.
A final push along the snowy ridge brings you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m. Celebrate this extraordinary achievement before descending back to Kibo Hut for a short rest.
You then continue down to Horombo Hut, passing through dramatically changing vegetation zones. This is a long but rewarding day, ending with a well-deserved rest at a comfortable lower altitude.

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest

Your final descent takes you through the heather and moorland back into the lush rainforest. Enjoy the shaded canopy and keep an eye out for wildlife as you complete your trek.
At Marangu Gate, you sign out, enjoy celebratory moments with your crew, and receive your summit certificates. A vehicle awaits to transfer you back to your hotel for a warm shower and relaxation.
