- 8 Days Lemosho Route
Overview
The 8-Day Lemosho Route is considered one of the best routes on Kilimanjaro for acclimatization, scenery, and a balanced ascent profile. Starting from the remote western side of the mountain, it provides lush rainforest trails, sweeping wilderness views, and a well-paced itinerary designed to improve your summit chances. Below is the complete day-by-day itinerary.
Itinerary In Details
Day 1: Lemosho Gate (2,100m) → Big Tree Camp (2,780m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Your adventure begins with a picturesque drive to Lemosho Gate for registration and introductions to your mountain crew. From here, your trek starts through dense, untouched rainforest rich in wildlife and birdsong. The trail is gentle and peaceful, offering a relaxed start.
You arrive at Big Tree Camp, tucked beneath towering forest canopy—a serene first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2,780m) → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Leaving the forest behind, you climb steadily toward the Shira Plateau—one of the world’s highest plateaus. As you gain altitude, the landscape transforms from lush greenery to open moorland. Views toward the Shira Ridge and western slopes of Kilimanjaro begin to emerge.
You reach Shira 1 Camp, where the wide moorland plains offer your first clear sightings of Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) → Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
A shorter day designed to help your body acclimatize. Today you traverse the Shira Plateau, enjoying sweeping panoramas and unique high-altitude flora—giant groundsels, everlasting flowers, and lobelias.
You arrive at Shira 2 Camp, perfectly positioned for sunsets and close-up views of the summit cone. Optional acclimatization hikes in the afternoon are encouraged.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) → Lava Tower (4,600m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: High Alpine Desert
This is your first truly high-altitude day. You trek upward toward Lava Tower, reaching 4,600m—a crucial acclimatization point. The “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body prepare for the summit later.
After lunch at Lava Tower, you descend dramatically into the scenic Barranco Valley, surrounded by cliffs and the famous Barranco Wall.
Overnight at Barranco Camp, one of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic and beautiful campsites.
Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The morning begins with the thrilling ascent of the Barranco Wall, an enjoyable scramble offering panoramic views of the southern glaciers. At the top, the path stretches through rolling valleys and ridges.
You arrive at Karanga Camp, the last water source before the summit push.
This shorter day is important for rest and acclimatization.
Day 6: Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
A steady climb over rocky terrain takes you to Barafu Camp, your high camp before summit night. The environment is stark yet awe-inspiring, with sweeping views of Mawenzi Peak and the glaciated upper slopes.
At Barafu, you rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the summit attempt.
Early sleep is essential—your summit bid begins just after midnight.
Day 7: Acclimatization Day – Barafu Camp (4,640m) → Kosovo Camp (4,900m)
Hiking Time: 2–3 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
This additional acclimatization day is what sets the 8-day itinerary apart.
You take a short but meaningful climb to Kosovo Camp, a quieter, higher-altitude camp that improves your summit chances by giving you more rest at greater elevation.
The hike is gentle, helping your body adjust without overexertion.
Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing your gear for summit night.
Sleeping closer to the start of the summit trail offers a significant advantage.
Day 8: Kosovo/Barafu (4,640–4,900m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone → Rainforest
Your summit push begins around midnight.
The route ascends steeply toward Stella Point (5,756m), where you witness a breathtaking sunrise over Africa. After a short, emotional final stretch, you arrive at Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent.
After celebrating, photographing, and embracing the moment, you descend to Barafu or Kosovo for a brief rest before continuing downward.
The long descent brings you through multiple vegetation zones to Mweka Camp, your final overnight on Kilimanjaro.
Day 9 (Departure Day): Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,650m)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your final descent winds through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you sign out and receive your summit certificates.
Your vehicle awaits to take you back to your hotel for a hot shower, a hearty meal, and well-earned relaxation
