Tipping Policy

Tipping on Your Trek

Tipping is a standard way to thank your trekking crew for their hard work. The amount is a personal decision based on the quality of service, not on whether you reach the summit.

When and How to Tip

  • Discuss with your group near the end of the trek to decide on final amounts.
  • The best time to tip; This almost always happens on the last day of the trek, after you have descended to the final gate (usually Mweka or Marangu Gate), but before you get back into the vehicle to return to your hotel.
  • Do not tip on the mountain. Only pay for extra drinks if available (Marangu route only).
  • You can tip in US dollars, Euros, or Tanzanian Shillings.

Recommended Daily Tipping Rates (per staff member)

  • Chief Guide: $20 – $25
  • Assistant Guide: $15 – $20
  • Cook: $10 – $15
  • Porter: $8 – $10

Your Trekking Crew

The size of your crew depends on your route and group size:

Important Tips & Rules

  • Confirm your crew: On the first day, ask your guide to confirm the total number of staff in your crew. Only tip these individuals.
  • Transparency: When you hand over the tips at the hotel, ensure the guide is with at least one other crew member as a witness.
  • Other Gifts: Besides money, items like clothing or footwear (new or used) for adults or children are also highly appreciated.
  • A Personal Thank You: You are welcome to invite your guides for drinks or dinner at the hotel as an extra thank you.

If There is a Problem

  • You are not obligated to tip if the service was unsatisfactory.
  • If your guides or porters did not meet your expectations, please report it to Kilimanjaroland immediately.
  • It is against policy for staff to ask for tips during the trek. If this happens, please inform Kilimanjaroland management.
