6-Day Umbwe Route – Full Itinerary Description
The Umbwe Route is the steepest and most direct path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, making it a challenging but rewarding option for experienced trekkers. Known for its rapid ascent and dramatic scenery, this route approaches the mountain from the south and joins the Machame Route at Barranco Camp. Trekkers pass through dense rainforest, rugged ridges, alpine desert, and glacial summit zones before reaching Uhuru Peak.
Below is the complete day-by-day itinerary.
Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) → Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your adventure begins at Umbwe Gate, where registration and a detailed trek briefing take place. After meeting your mountain crew, you enter the dense rainforest, one of the most pristine and untouched sections of Kilimanjaro.
The trail climbs steeply from the start, winding through towering trees draped with moss and vines. The forest is alive with bird calls and the occasional sighting of colobus monkeys.
You arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, a quiet and remote campsite deep within the forest. The peaceful surroundings and cool mountain air provide an excellent setting to rest and prepare for the next day’s ascent.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Today the trail continues steeply upward as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The landscape opens dramatically, revealing giant heathers, volcanic rock formations, and expansive mountain views.
You ascend along a narrow ridge, offering breathtaking perspectives of valleys below and towering cliffs above. The scenery becomes more rugged and dramatic as you approach Barranco Camp.
Barranco Camp sits beneath the towering Barranco Wall and offers spectacular views of Kibo’s southern glaciers. This is one of the most scenic camps on the mountain and an excellent location for acclimatization.
Day 3: Barranco Camp (3,960m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble that rewards you with incredible views. Once at the top, the trail descends into the Karanga Valley before climbing again toward Karanga Camp.
The environment becomes increasingly barren, with fewer plants and more exposed rock formations. The dramatic alpine desert landscape provides a sense of the mountain’s raw beauty.
Karanga Camp offers a strategic acclimatization stop and prepares you for the final push toward high altitude camps.
Day 4: Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek takes you higher into the alpine desert zone. The trail climbs steadily over rocky terrain, and the air becomes noticeably thinner.
Barafu Camp, meaning “ice” in Swahili, sits on an exposed ridge and serves as your base camp for the summit attempt. From here, you enjoy incredible views of Mawenzi Peak and the vast plains below.
After an early dinner, you rest and prepare your gear for the summit climb, which begins shortly after midnight.
Day 5 (Summit Day): Barafu Camp (4,640m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Rainforest
Summit day begins in the early hours of the morning. With headlamps lighting the way, you ascend steep switchbacks across loose volcanic scree toward Stella Point (5,756m).
As dawn approaches, the sky glows with color, and you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
The lower altitude and thicker air make this a welcome and restful night after your summit success.
Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your final descent takes you back through the lush rainforest. The trail is gentle and scenic, offering a final opportunity to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s natural beauty.
Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you sign out and receive your summit certificates. Your driver will transfer you back to your hotel for rest and celebration.
