Kilimanjaro Routes
Mount Kilimanjaro has 7 major trekking routes, each offering a different experience in terms of scenery, difficulty, crowd levels, and success rates. Below is a clear breakdown to help you compare and understand each one.
1. Marangu Route (Coca-Cola Route)
- Duration: 5–6 days
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Accommodation: Huts (not tents)
- Scenery: Fair but less varied than other routes
- Best for: Beginners and budget climbers
- Notes:
- Only route with hut accommodation
- Shorter acclimatization → lower summit success rate
- Most direct path to the summit
2. Machame Route (Whiskey Route)
- Duration: 6–7 days
- Difficulty: Challenging but rewarding
- Accommodation: Camping
- Scenery: Stunning – rainforest, ridges, valleys, glaciers
- Best for: Fit hikers wanting beautiful scenery
- Notes:
- One of the most popular routes
- Good acclimatization profile
- Steep sections require strong fitness
3. Lemosho Route
- Duration: 7–8 days
- Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
- Accommodation: Camping
- Scenery: Exceptional – considered one of the best
- Best for: Those wanting a good balance of success rate, low crowds, and beauty
- Notes:
- High success rate due to gradual acclimatization
- Starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro
- Joins Machame route mid-way
4. Shira Route
- Duration: 7–8 days
- Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
- Accommodation: Camping
- Scenery: Similar to Lemosho
- Best for: Experienced trekkers

- Starts at high altitude, increasing risk of AMS early
- Joins Lemosho/Machame after Shira Plateau
