7-Day Shira Route – Full Itinerary Description

The Shira Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west and begins at a higher elevation than most routes, offering expansive views from the start. Known for its wide open landscapes and gradual ascent, this route crosses the Shira Plateau before joining the Machame Route. Trekkers experience diverse ecosystems, dramatic volcanic formations, and breathtaking summit views.

Below is the complete day-by-day itinerary.

 

Day 1: Shira Gate (3,400m) → Shira Camp 1 (3,500m)

Hiking Time: 1–2 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Your adventure begins with a drive to Shira Gate, where registration and briefing take place. The trek starts across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth.

The trail is gentle, allowing your body to begin acclimatizing while enjoying panoramic views of the mountain and surrounding plains.

You arrive at Shira Camp 1, located in open moorland with spectacular views of Kibo Peak.

 

Day 2: Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) → Shira Camp 2 (3,850m)

Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland

Today you continue across the Shira Plateau, a unique and expansive landscape formed by ancient volcanic activity.

The terrain is open and scenic, with giant lobelias and senecio plants dotting the landscape.

Arrival at Shira Camp 2 provides excellent views and prepares you for higher elevations.

 

Day 3: Shira Camp 2 (3,850m) → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

This important acclimatization day follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle. You ascend to Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation.

After spending time at higher altitude, you descend to Barranco Camp, allowing your body to adjust.

Barranco Camp offers incredible views of glaciers and towering cliffs.

 

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m) → Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The day begins with the climb up Barranco Wall, a thrilling but manageable scramble.

You descend into Karanga Valley before climbing to Karanga Camp, surrounded by rugged alpine terrain.

 

Day 5: Karanga Camp (4,035m) → Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

You continue ascending toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt.

Rest and preparation are essential before the summit push.

 

Day 6 (Summit Day): Barafu Camp (4,640m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Rainforest

You begin your summit ascent before midnight, climbing steep slopes toward Stella Point.

From there, you continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating, descend to Mweka Camp for rest.

 

Day 7: Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

Your final descent leads through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where certificates are awarded and transfer to your hotel follows.
